Roger Tremaine - Starting Nine
Roger Tremaine† served as the Executive Director of the Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA) from May, 1984 - October of 2005. He attended the original organization meeting of the CABA in the fall of 1983 called by founder and first President Ron Golden and Vice-president Scott Stewart. Roger was the CABA Person of the Year in 1984. Other benchmarks and accomplishments include Roger serving as: a term as President of the All American Amateur Baseball Association; President of the Ohio Association of the American Amateur Baseball Congress; 1997 American Amateur Baseball Congress Executive of the Year; Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana State Director of Dizzy Dean Baseball; Colt Regional Director for the West Region of the East Zone USA of Pony Baseball; Executive Director and founder of the Central Ohio Amateur Baseball Federation; 1980 Central Ohio Amateur Baseball Federation Person of the year. He did all that while further nurturing youths in his “real world” profession as Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Otterbein College. The Central Ohio Amateur Baseball Federation (COABF) was born in 1979 as a result of the efforts of Roger Tremaine.
Roger was born in Bedford, Ohio in 1939. He attended Bedford High School, Kent State University, Arizona State University and Ohio State University. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics Education at Kent State University and his masters in Mathematics at Arizona State University. During 1958 Roger began his association with Amateur Baseball working in the Cleveland Baseball Federation program. His association with the Cleveland organization led to the involvement with various National Baseball organizations. He served on several National and State Tournament Committees.
Roger’s innovative ideas of round robin tournaments, single age programs, low cost fees and an all volunteer staff have made the CABA into one of the most competitive baseball organizations in the World. Having teams participate from Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Korea, and Japan gave the CABA instant credibility.
Computers have always played a big part in Rogers life, his development of the CABA Statistical program and the CABA World Wide Web site was most assuredly one of his greatest interests. Roger believed in being a member of all Amateur Baseball programs that do not limit registrations in other national programs so that more players would get the opportunity to play highly competitive tournament baseball. This type of thinking has structured many CABA rules to not interfere with meeting that objective. Roger was loved and recognized throughout the world, CABA and amateur baseball as a whole was very lucky to have a friend like Roger.
The CABA national board changed the name of the Most Valuable Player Award to “The Roger Tremaine Most Valuable Player” and The Person of The Year Award to “The Roger Tremaine Person of The Year Award”, in Roger’s honor. For many years, Roger was certainly our Most Valuable Player.

John Mocny - Starting Nine
Residence: Euclid, Ohio; Family: Wife Carole, sons Doug (Cathy) and Tim (Gina), Grandchildren: Douglas, Eric, Nicholas, Adam, and Marrisa; Education: Euclid Senior High School; Occupation: Retired, prior to retirement Plant Manager for Ameritech and Ohio Bell Telephone for 39 1/2 years retiring during 1991; Hobbies: Baseball, Basketball, Fishing and Golf; Favorite Team: Cleveland Indians.
Looking Back: When California's George "Hats" Omachi was killed in a automobile accident, John added yet another title to his resume; Commissioner and Newspaper Editor for the Continental Amateur Baseball Association. President Williams appointed John to fulfill the term of office "Hats" had been elected to, and John was elected to that same position at the next Annual Meeting.
Being Commissioner is like being Vice-President. Carl E. Williams is our President. The Continental Amateur Baseball Associations one of the best amateur baseball organizations in the Nation. When he first got started he thought being Commissioner of The Euclid Boys league (800+ players) was a large undertaking. Being Commissioner of the Continental Amateur Baseball Association represents numerous challenges which John enjoys handling.
When President Williams asked John to assume the responsibilities as Commissioner he looked into his credentials: Lifetime Euclid, Ohio resident including editor of The Continental Amateur Baseball Association's Winter and Fall News plus the High School World Series Edition of the Baseball City News. Also included are many civic offices. He was Chairman of the City of Euclid, Ohio Enterprise Zone Committee. John's Euclid Boys League offices held include: Commissioner, Vice-Commissioner, Treasurer, League President, Manager, Coach, First Life member, First Mr. Euclid Boys League. John has been a Trustee in the Euclid Chamber of Commerce, has been Chairman, and is now the Vice-Chairman of the City of Euclid, Ohio Planning and Zoning Commission. John said "I have held every office in the Euclid Boys League except secretary, and if I had a computer at the time I would have held that position."
With Mocny's devotion to the diamond, his fondest coaching memories have come in basketball, where as Athletic Director and Coach at St. Christine's, he led his teams to eight championship seasons in the St. Joseph CYO League.
John got involved in Euclid, Ohio baseball when his oldest son Doug, then nine years old, signed up to play in the Euclid Boys League.
John said "Sports keeps me busy and I enjoy it. My philosophy when working with the youth of our nation is, if we can provide them with a place to play, we can keep them off the streets and off drugs. Maybe this gives them a fighting chance. It's tough being a young person these days, a lot tougher than when I was growing up. I'll do it as long as I am able. You meet a lot of wonderful people and a lot of nice players. It's so rewarding to have players return ten years later and say Hi Mr. Mocny.

Dr. Duane Buck - 2007
Duane was looking for a practical real-world example of a computer application that could be used in his senior level C++ course for computer science majors. While co-teaching an elementary computer science course at Otterbein College in 1993 with Executive Director Roger Tremaine he learned that there was a need for a PC version of the CABA statistical program. This began his involvement with the Continental Amateur Baseball Association.
Early versions of his C++ program were developed and used both in his Otterbein course work and by the Executive Directors early as 1994. The speed of reading in files and sorting for reports was done quickly. However, the C++ framework he based the user interface on was different from the Macintosh interface Roger had developed using Future Basic, and Roger did not think the program should be distributed because it might cause confusion. That slowed the project until 1997 when Duane decided to do the computer interface with the new JAVA programming language being developed by Sun Micro systems, Inc. Duane spent months rewriting the interface using the Java programming language and then spent more months with Roger running the two programs side-by-side making the Java version click-for-click, keystroke-for-keystroke, and message-for-message identical to the Future Basic version.
CABA now utilizes Duane’s version exclusively. Duane has also been developing the cababaseball.com website for the past ten years. All the statistics for the current year and past years are available on the website. Schedules are developed and distributed on the website. The website is driven by a database that records many aspects of the CABA organization.
Duane was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1953. His family moved to the Detroit, Michigan area in 1957. He graduated from Henry Ford High School in 1971 and from Lawrence Technical University with a BS in Physics and Mathematics in 1975. He received a Master of Arts degree from Wayne State University in 1977. Duane worked as a systems analyst at American Natural Service Company from 1977-1979, General Motors from 1979-1985 and Ford Motor Company from 1985-1987. From 1987 to 1991 he was working full time on his Ph.D. degree and teaching as a graduate associate at The Ohio State University. Duane received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science in 1993. He has been employed by Otterbein College since 1991 and currently has tenure and holds the rank of Associate Professor.
Continental Baseball is appreciative of all the work that Duane has put into this project on both the statistical program development and the Internet.

Tanya Wilkinson - 2007
In 1984 Tanya and her husband, Randy Wilkinson, moved to Aurelia, Iowa, from a small Northwest Missouri town near Tarkio. In the spring of 1986, the couple received a call from Don White, Tournament Director of the CABA 11 & Under World Series. The tournament had just received word of a late team cancellation and could the Wilkinsons get a team together on short notice. Their friends in Tarkio knew of the love for baseball that Tanya and Randy had so they also knew this would be the perfect call to make, and of course, with just that one call a team from Northwest Iowa was committed to the tournament.
This began the love relationship between the Wilkinsons and CABA. Tanya made a positive impression on Executive Director Roger Tremaine because of the energy and organizational skills she exhibited. In the fall of 1987, Tanya was asked to become the Franchise Director for the National CABA Organization. She enjoyed the years she served as a CABA National Director until her resignation to pursue family commitments. In addition to holding a National Office with CABA, she served 10 years as Housing Director for the CABA 10 & Under World Series held in Aurelia. Tanya still answers to “Mom Wilkinson” to some of the CABA boys they housed as 10-year-olds, which they have remained in contact with.
Tanya and Randy have always worked as a team in all their baseball endeavors. They have spent many of their anniversaries and birthdays at a ball field. Their daughter Jill was a baseball player until they moved to Aurelia where girls were expected to play softball, which she played until she graduated. Their son Ryan played baseball from T-ball, to his first CABA World Series at nine, and through his college years. Tanya has always believed strongly in CABA’s founding fathers’ motto, “Give a boy a ball, a bat, and a place to play, and he will never go astray.” As a kindergarten teacher for 25 years, she has seen how true this motto is in the lives of our youth.
Tanya and Randy now enjoy trips to Kansas City, Kansas, to spend time with Jill, Andrew, and granddaughter Hadley. They also love traveling to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to watch Ryan coach his high school teams.

Larry Redwine - 2008
Just starting into his fourth year of service to C.A.B.A. as Executive Director , Larry Redwine has a long trail of baseball experience from which to draw pearls for leadership.
As a player, Larry was a starting pitcher/outfielder on the first Princeton HS team to ever win a league baseball championship. He then continued on to be a starting pitcher at Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) a perennial FAVC power in those days.
Larry coached for the first time between his freshman and sophomore years in college. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1971, (Where his final assignment was in the Customs and Investigations Section of his police squadron at C.C.K. Air Base, Taiwan, serving as liaison to the O.S.I.) he then began a 32 consecutive year run as a coach, before taking a break after the 2003 season. As a summer team head coach from 1978 through 2003, his teams compiled a record of 1,248 wins against 328 losses. Thirteen of his teams from 1985, (when he began coaching at the national level), through 2003, finished in the top four in the nation, including six third place finishes, three runners-up and a 1988 national championship team that also reached the rained out championship game in the USA Baseball sponsored Junior Olympics. Larry served as assistant coach at Xavier University for nearly two years before serving as Head Coach for more than 9 years. During that time, Xavier captured Midwestern Collegiate Conference division championships in 1984, ’85 and ’87 and Larry was named MCC Coach of the Year in 1984 & 1987, when the team set the current season wins record despite being the lowest funded team in the conference. The list of his former players includes current or former major leaguers Ken Griffey Jr., Mark Lewis, Jay(hawk) Owens, David Bell, Ricky Stone, Aaron Cook and Adam Hyzdu. Former player Mike Hill has also reached the position of General Manager/Vice President for the Florida Marlins. A total of 104 of Larry’s former players have worn a professional uniform and over 250 have played in colleges from Stanford to Harvard, Michigan to Miami of Florida and all points between. Larry freely admits that C.A.B.A. Vice President for Public Relations Mike Montgomery, Kentucky and Central indiana Director Todd Montgomery and C.A.B.A. Vice President of Legal Mike Maundrell carried him through many of those years.
As an Athletic Administrator, Larry is the founder and the only President of the 25 year-old Southwest Ohio League, C.A.B.A.'s largest affiliate. Along with serving as Executive Director of C.A.B.A., he also serves as Mickey Mantle National Vice President for the A.A.B.C. and in state leadership capacities for a few other national organizations. Larry is also on the Executive Board of the Global Baseball Alliance.
Despite his insistence that he would not coach a high school team, God had other plans. In four years as the Head Varsity baseball Coach at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Larry's teams have compiled a 48-1 record in league play capturing four league titles. In addition, those teams have won 4 sectional championships, 3 district, one regional and in 2005, were the only CHCA baseball team to ever advance to the state final 4. That year, the team was also the state poll champions in Division III. During Redwine’s four years, the team has a 96-21 record, all but one of those losses coming at the hands of much larger and higher division schools.
Larry’s wife Nona, who worked in upstream Product Research & Development at Procter & Gamble, retired in 2001 after 30 years on the job. She now takes on research projects at Procter & Gamble from time to time through a company named Your Encore. Their son, Adam, was all-city three times, the FAVC Player of the Year (setting Mason High School records) and an all-state performer in 1988 at Mason H.S., before going on to play four years at Ohio University. Adam, (who works in business development and account management with Fisher Design) and wife Brandi (a Fashion Designer) was an accomplished track star. They have three beautiful daughters named Haley (9) Olivia (7) and Ava (3), who are indeed the light of their grandfather’s eye.

Jim Albright - 2008
It’s been almost forty years since Bob Valiska asked Jim Albright, a first year teacher fresh out of Monmouth College, to be his varsity baseball assistant at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills, IL. That began a baseball coaching career that lasted until he retired from coaching after the 1994 season.
In 1989, he founded the Fox Valley Hurricanes (now the McHenry County Hurricanes), a traveling team program that has become one of the premier programs in northern Illinois.
During his coaching tenure, his teams won several league, state, and national invitational championships.
Jim’s association with CABA began in 1987 when Dennis O’Holleran asked him to help coach the team representing Illinois in the 13 year Old World Series in McCook, NE.
In the fall of 1992, Jim convinced Carl Williams and Roger Tremaine that McHenry County, IL, would be the ideal location for the 1993 CABA 15 Year Old World Series. The following summer, then, began a run that has now lasted sixteen consecutive years. That first summer also provided the opportunity to introduce EnRico Heirman to CABA. Both the 9 Year Old World Series and 11 Year Old World Series events were moved to McHenry County in 2006.
During his 22 year relationship with CABA, Jim has coached in five CABA World Series events, served as a CABA World Series Director on four occasions (the 15 Year Old World Series Director in 1993 and the 9 Year Old World Series Director the past three years), and has served as a World Series field announcer and the color commentator for the local cable broadcasts. And in 2005, he was the first inductee into the local CABA Hall of Fame.
Jim has also served as an Illinois High School Association official in three sports; baseball (20 years), basketball (27 years), and soccer (currently in his 34th season). He officiated the first Iowa boy’s soccer state finals in 1995 and the Illinois state finals in 2004.
A native of Waukegan, IL, Jim lives with his wife, Jean, just outside of Johnsburg, IL. They have three sons (Bucky, Tim, and Chris), all of whom played in CABA World Series events. Jim and Jean also have four grandchildren.

Tom McNamara - 2008
On a Spring day in 1987, Ed Carpenter and I were walking between diamonds in Euclid’s Memorial Park talking about ... what else?... baseball. Ed asked me, “What would you think if some of the best high school baseball players in the country came here to Euclid to play?”. I responded, “Heck, I’d even pay to see them play.”. He said, “Good. You’re my World Series director.” And so it began. From our rather humble beginnings of one venue, twelve teams, and some 250 players in 1987, the CABA HSWS has grown to eight venues, 40 teams, and some 900 players. It has been my pleasure to have been the World Series Director for all 23 of those years.
Besides the hundreds of volunteers with whom it has been my good fortune to work, I owe whatever success that I, and the High School World Series, may have achieved, as well as this singular honor of being inducted into the CABA Hall of Fame, primarily to three men. First, of course, to Ed Carpenter, the National Age Division Director. He knew how much I loved and respected the game of baseball and its traditions. He gives his full and unconditional support to my Director activities and responsibilities. Of the 1,001 matters for which a Tournament Director is responsible, I take care of maybe five. Ed takes care of the other 996. I will ever be grateful for his trust and confidence in me and for allowing me this opportunity. Second, to Roger Tremaine. In 1987, I knew nothing of CABA. Through Roger’s patient, but insistent instruction, I came to know and respect CABA, its purposes, objectives, and philosophy. Roger knew that any organization is only as strong as its weakest link. He instilled in me the desire to do all in my power to make the HSWS one of the strongest links in the CABA chain. Roger often came to Euclid during HSWS week because he loved to observe the care and attention his “baby” was receiving. He was a great Executive Director because he was always available when needed, but otherwise let us proceed unhindered. Third, to current Commissioner John Mocny. Baseball is ultimately a game of numbers. What are the current standings? Who are the leading hitters? Pitchers? John implemented a program for the HSWS that gave us these particulars nearly instantaneously. Our World Series format has become somewhat involved and John has truly been “Johnny on the Spot” when we needed the correct numbers to move the World Series along without undue delay. And so it has been my pleasure and privilege to direct the CABA HSWS these many years. Days at the park from 7:00 in the morning until 11:00 at night seem hardly a burden when I have been able to watch such stellar HSWS players as this year’s Alumni of the Year, Jayson Werth, Alex Rodriguez, Andy Sonnanstine, Johnny Damon, Josh Hamilton, and scores of others who have played in the Major Leagues.
I am deeply honored as an inductee into the Continental Amateur Baseball Association Hall of Fame and I thank all who have made this honor possible.

Becky Burkhart - 2009
Becky has been involved with youth sports for over 30 years. Baseball is her first love, however because of her son Joel, she found herself involved in several youth sports. Football, Basketball and Baseball, to name a few, kept her busy.
In 1987 she became a team mom and coaches wife that participated in the Washington State Sandy Koufax select league. The President/Director at that time appointed Becky’s husband, Steve Buckley, to the Director position for the 1988 season. That same season, CABA appointed Steve the Regional Director for the Pacific Northwest. For the next 7 seasons, Becky and Steve worked together in the running of the Sandy Koufax league and promoting CABA World Series berths. Baseball continued to grow in Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
In 1995, Becky and Steve’s marriage ended. At that time, Steve appointed Becky as the President/Director of the Washington State Sandy Koufax Baseball league and CABA Regional Director. With Becky’s hard work, guidance and direction, CABA saw a stable increase in the Region. Youth Baseball without “politics” is one of Becky’s philosophies. The Sandy Koufax program and Continental Amateur Baseball Association is run exactly that way.
In 1999, Becky was chosen “Woman of the Year” by American Amateur Baseball Congress and “Person of the Year” by Continental Amateur Baseball Association.
In 2003, Becky was given the “Presidents Choice” award from Continental Amateur Baseball Association for her hard work in promoting Post Season/World Series play.
In 2005, on a cruise ship for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, in the middle of the Panama Canal Becky met Jim Brookhart. Jim is a professional/entertainer and performs in the “Schooner Bar“, singing and playing piano. Jim and Becky were married in July 2008 and are now working on baseball and music together. Jim is the Washington State league game scheduler and Becky sings with Jim as a duo called “The Brookhart’s”. Jim and Becky say, “We both love what we do and have a wonderful time doing both jobs together”.
The future for CABA in Washington State and the Pacific Northwest continues to grow and is bright. Becky is very proud to have played a part in that success.
